PETALING JAYA: Gerakan Youth Chief Tan Keng Liang insisted that the Opposition choose once and for all who they want as their designated prime minister following conflicting statements from two Opposition parties.

Tan was referring to DAP Publicity Chief Tony Pua who said that Pakatan Harapan’s designated prime minister was still Anwar Ibrahim.

This came in response to a statement by Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) Chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad that its pro-term president, Muhyiddin Yassin, is the designated prime minister if the Opposition wins in the next general election.

“So, who is the Opposition’s choice as their designated prime minister?

“I believe this is a fundamental question for the Opposition to answer,” said Tan in a statement.

Tan wondered how the Opposition could lead Malaysia if they failed to come to a compromise on who should be their designated prime minister.

“In a democratic state, we need a constructive Opposition as a check and balance. However, at this juncture, the Opposition is in a state of confusion and, clearly, they are not fit to even be the Opposition.”

Tan added several months ago, he had said that the era of Anwar as the Opposition chief had ended and it was likely for Mahathir’s camp to lead the Opposition.

“I urge the Opposition to decide their designated prime minister and not to confuse Malaysians further.”
