PETALING JAYA: Police in Spain are providing Real Madrid star Gareth Bale and his fiancee Emma Rhys-Jones special protection following arson attacks to her family back in the United Kingdom, The Daily Mail reported yesterday.

The paper said that cars belonging to the grandparents and aunt of Rhys-Jones were torched while petrol was poured through another aunt’s home in North Wales.

UK police believe that the attacks are linked to Rhys-Jones’ cousin, Epiphany Dring, 27, who is believed to have absconded to Malaysia with money, drugs and valuables worth around £1 million (RM5.35 million) belonging to a drug gang.

According to the UK daily, Dring’s family had last seen her five weeks ago.

A source told the paper: “There were three armed police posted outside the rooms, obviously there to make sure there were no unwanted visitors. It was pretty extreme for such a luxury hotel, renowned for its old-fashioned charm.”

Meanwhile, North Wales police said a 22-year-old man has been charged with criminal damage, and a 54-year-old woman was also arrested, allegedly for making death threats over the family dispute.

Dring was said to have been staying with her grandparents John McMurray, 79, and his wife Eva, 84, in Cardiff, South Wales, but neighbours told The Daily Mail the elderly couple seemed to have gone into hiding.

Bale’s fiancee is also reportedly worried that their £2 million home in Wales could also be targeted, but police have reassured them that the house is safe.
