According to Astro Awani, Izwan Isa, 39, and his four-year-old daughter, Nur Zulaikha Izwan, were victims of a 131cc engine go-kart that veered off the track and crashed through barriers before hitting the spectators.
The incident happened during the Go-Kart Education Innovation Motorsports and Automative Race (Eimarace) 2016 which took place at the Indera Mahkota Sukpa Complex in Kuantan.
The father died at the scene while his daughter drew her last breath at Hospital Tengku Ampuan Afzan after suffering serious head injuries.
According to witnesses, the go-kart lost control while trying to overtake another, before crashing into spectators.
A short clip of the incident was shared on social media, where it showed that there were only plastic “jersey” barriers – the type usually used along highway construction areas – separating the spectators from the race track.
Kuantan Deputy Police Chief Superintendent Abdul Aziz Ahmad confirmed the incident, adding that several other spectators were also injured.
NST Online said among the injured were Izwan’s wife, teacher Siti Suhaiza Seman, 38, and son Muhammad Izz Danial Izwan, 7. The news portal said they are in serious condition at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital.
It said Eimarace was organised by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia with the cooperation of Tourism Pahang.
The race was cancelled following the tragedy, it added.
