PETALING JAYA: As the United Nations General Assembly sees world leaders gather in New York this week, the UN Childrens’ Fund (Unicef) has decided to shine the spotlight on the plight facing some of the most vulnerable people on the planet – refugee and migrant children.

In a world filled with strife and division, what better way than to use John Lennon’s iconic song Imagine, to bring home the intended message in a new video featuring Unicef ambassadors from around the world.

Malaysia has its moment too, with Unicef Malaysia’s National Ambassadors Upin & Ipin, playing a small part, singing the unforgettable words “Imagine all the people…”, in their Manglish accent.

The music video was launched today, and it also features singers will.I.am, Katy Perry and Shakira; actors Idris Elba and Priyanka Chopra; sports stars Neymar (football) and Pau Gasol (basketball), and a host of other celebrities who are Unicef ambassadors in their respective countries.

Even John Lennon is “brought back to life” as he is seen singing the chorus on two occasions.

Contributions also include user-generated pieces from all over the world, including creative renditions from Antarctica and the International Space Station.

This new version of Imagine aims to encourage acceptance, reduce discrimination and to support efforts for the 50 million children around the world who have been uprooted.

Unicef promotes the rights and wellbeing of every child, and work in 190 countries and territories to translate that commitment into practical action, focusing special effort on reaching the most vulnerable and excluded children, to the benefit of all children, everywhere.
