PETALING JAYA:
The Putrajaya Monorail project, which was derailed in 2004 due to budget constraints, could be back on track.

MMC Corporation Berhad (MMC) has submitted a proposal to the Economic Council (EC) to revive the project, The Sun reported today.

If approved, the project is expected to be completed by 2021 – which would complement the completion of MRT 2 (Sg Buloh-Putrajaya) the same year, the report said.

The project will be under the purview of the Economic Planning Unit and other agencies.

“For a start, the monorail station at Putrajaya Sentral will integrate with the first station of MRT 2, with seamless connection via an 84m skybridge,” the source was quoted as saying by the local daily.

It is unclear if the Putrajaya monorail project is a solo effort by MMC or a joint venture with other project delivery partners. MMC is currently in a JV with Gamuda Berhad in the construction of the MRT.

The source also told The Sun that funding for the project could be sourced via private financing or by adopting a public-private partnership model.

According to the original plan proposed in 2004, Phase One of the project was estimated to cost RM400 million for two lines.

The report also mentioned that a 4km underground track and 9km track above ground was already built up before the entire project was shelved.

Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) Chairman Syed Hamid Albar is also said to have confirmed with the daily that MMC had submitted a proposal to the EC to revive the project and that SPAD will now be conducting a feasibility study for monorail and tram services for both Putrajaya and Cyberjaya.
