Raja Sara Petra slams hypocrisy of M’sians

"Monkeys do not understand flowers just like Malaysians do not understand democracy and freedom of speech," says blogger’s daughter.

PETALING JAYA:
Are those who are anti-government the only ones allowed to comment on the country’s politics?

This was the question posed by Raja Sara Petra, the daughter of controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin.

She hit back at those slamming her father for talking about Malaysian politics.

Taking to Facebook, Raja Sara said the critics claimed her father had no right to speak on what was happening locally as he was no longer living in the country, although he is still a Malaysian citizen.

“The surprising thing is these people do not say the same thing about Clare Rewcastle-Brown of Sarawak Report, who not only does not live in Malaysia but is not even a Malaysian citizen.

“And what about the Wall Street Journal and many other US publications that talk about Malaysia?

“None of their journalists live in Malaysia or are Malaysian citizens.”

Raja Sara then pointed out the hypocrisy and double standards, saying that some Malaysians had the notion that opposing the government made them patriotic.

Supporting the government, on the other hand, made them a traitor to the country, she added.

“Is the issue about my father not living in Malaysia, or is it you can comment on Malaysian politics even if you do not live in Malaysia or are not a Malaysian citizen, just as long as you support the Opposition and are anti-government?

“There are thousands of Malaysians who live in the UK, US, Australia, etc, some who even have PR (permanent resident) status of those countries, who participate in Bersih and many other anti-Malaysian Government activities.

“Many of them are not even registered voters or vote in Malaysian elections.

“Some have not been back to Malaysia in decades.”

Sara said while Malaysians have been crying out for freedom of speech, views that are critical of the Opposition will often be criticised and result in the individuals being slammed with “all sorts of nasty things”.

“They support democracy and freedom of speech only if you are anti-government.

“If you are not an Opposition supporter, then you lose your right to speak.

“Malaysians still live in the dark ages when if you disagree with me you must be put to death.

“These people are what the Malays would say: like giving a flower to a monkey.

“Monkeys do not understand flowers just like Malaysians do not understand democracy and freedom of speech.”

Raja Petra, back in 2008, was detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) 1960 for allegedly insulting Islam, but was freed when the Kuala Lumpur High Court ruled the government had acted outside its powers in imposing the detention.

He went into self-imposed exile in the UK after the government appealed the decision.

Although the detention order has since lapsed and the ISA was also repealed in 2012, the blogger remains abroad and continues blogging about Malaysia’s politics, often critical of the Opposition.
