KUALA LUMPUR:
The Malaysian Paralympic champions today made their rounds in Kuala Lumpur City Centre in an “open top bus”, gathering cheers and honks from pedestrians and vehicles passing by.

This was after the team received a grand welcome home at the Bunga Raya Complex in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), where a crowd of hundreds gathered to show support for their local heroes.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin welcomed the Paralympians with open arms, greeting them with hugs before hopping into his vehicle that followed behind the bus that toured the city of KL.

The convoy arrived in KLCC at about 7.30pm, again being greeted with a crowd of about a hundred that was already waiting for their arrival.

The crowd did not stop cheering, screaming “Kami luar biasa! (We are extraordinary!)” and occasionally breaking into song, singing the national anthem and other national songs.

After KLCC, the convoy headed to Pavilion shopping mall in Jalan Bukit Bintang where they were greeted by an even bigger crowd of about 400.

Citizens were generally delighted by the Paralympians’ presence, mostly cheering and some itching for the chance to take a “selfie” with the winners.

The national Paralympians created history by winning three gold medals and a bronze in Rio – all in athletics — and in the process ending the country’s long-awaited dream of securing Olympic gold medals after the nation’s normal athletes came close at the Rio Olympics.
