PETALING JAYA: Two-lane stretches on highways will only be expanded if there is a need for it, according to PLUS Malaysia Berhad (PLUS) Chief Operating Officer Mohammad Fuad Khusairi.

Speaking at a media briefing on highway maintenance at Persada PLUS today, Fuad said currently there was no need to add lanes along highways which only had two lanes as there was not much congestion in these areas.

“The traffic congestion in these areas is only apparent during festive seasons, otherwise two lanes are sufficient for these areas, especially on the North-South Expressway heading towards the north,” he said.

During the briefing, Fuad pointed out that PLUS invests RM1 billion every year on highway maintenance.

“About 74 per cent of the overall highway maintenance budget is focused on maintaining and repairing 4,800km of pavements.”

He said that the road pavement lifespan is determined by factors such as pavement type, weather, usage and traffic.

“As such, an extensive, continuous and strict maintenance regime is implemented to ensure the users’ safety and comfort.”

On whether or not PLUS would use CCTVs to nab those taking advantage of emergency lanes, Fuad said that PLUS was not in charge of enforcement.

“It’s not our job to catch people who wrongly use the emergency lanes. So, we won’t interfere with the duties of the authorities responsible.”
