Perda land sale: MACC still probing

Perda had sold the Tok Keramat land in Nibong Tebal for RM1.43 million although the Inland Revenue Board had valued it at RM16.636 million.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters is still investigating a report that the Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) allegedly sold land below the market value.

Penang MACC Director Abdul Aziz Aban said the probe was in the hands of the central office after a report on the matter was lodged in April, theSun reported.

MACC had recorded a statement from Penang Health, Rural and Regional Development Committee Chairman Dr Afif Bahardin on the matter after he lodged a report.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had shared documents on the deal with the media in March.

The documents purportedly showed Perda selling the Tok Keramat land in Nibong Tebal for RM1.43 million although the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) valued it RM16.636 million.

Perda Chairman and Tasek Gelugor MP Shahbudin Yahaya had defended the sale as the land was sold on the condition that developers build low-cost and low-medium cost housing there.

Penang Federal Action Council chairman Zainal Abidin Osman had said 107 units were built there but could not be occupied due to erosion problems and were later demolished.

“Later, the area was redeveloped but the cost was too high due to the instability of the land. Now, after 25 years, we are trying again, that’s why the price is low,” he said.
