KUALA LUMPUR:
A senior Federal police officer has warned police personnel to be careful when dealing with classified information.

Bukit Aman’s Director of Management Zulkifli Abdullah said members of the police force are not exempt from the long arm of the law when it comes to the issue of information leaks.

Speaking at a press conference here today, Zulkifli said that although in the recent past, no police personnel had been charged for breaching the Official Secrets Act (OSA), the threat was still there, given the technological advancement we have today.

“The advancement in communication technologies have contributed to the leaking of team secrets, especially those involving police operations, which have been accessed by certain irresponsible quarters.

“The situation is under control. I’m not saying nothing has been leaked, but we have taken steps to handle it.”

He said the police have also implemented necessary measures to prevent the possibility of any information leak from occurring, including tightening the security at the Federal police headquarters in Bukit Aman here.

“There are visitors who feel that it is very difficult to enter (Bukit Aman), but yes, we are extremely careful because we have a lot of information which should not be disseminated or shared with others.”

He also warned that the force would not hesitate to take action against any officer found to have disseminated classified information.

“If we have to, we will resort to taking legal action against police personnel and others involved in leaking confidential information.

“We can also take other action, including transferring police personnel who are responsible for information leaks to another department, or take disciplinary action against them.”
