Police not aware High Commissioner was in airport

Cops only wanted to 'stop the fight, save the victim' whom they didn't know, says state police chief, explaining why assailants in attack at KLIA were not arrested.

PETALING JAYA: The Sri Lanka High Commission did not notify the police of High Commissioner Ibrahim Sahib Ansar’s plans to accompany a Sri Lankan Minister to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) on Sunday, the state police chief said.

Selangor police chief Abdul Samah Mat added that the two policemen seen on a CCTV clip as having broken up the attack on the High Commissioner, also had no idea as to the identity of the victim at the time, The Sun Daily reported.

“We were not informed of the sending off of a Sri Lankan minister from KLIA.

“Initial investigations revealed that the attack on Ibrahim was linked to the protests against former Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s visit here,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal.

According to Abdul Samah, the failure of the two policemen to arrest the assailants in the attack on the High Commissioner can be attributed to their intention to only “stop the fight and save the victim”.

Selangor police have now set up a team to investigate the assault on Ibrahim.

It was reported earlier that police had arrested five men based on the CCTV footage. The suspects, aged between 27 and 56 years, are now being held under a three-day remand.

Three of the suspects were arrested in Sungai Siput, Perak while the other two were detained in Dengkil and Rawang Selangor, according to The Sun Daily.

Four more men are still being sought by the police, who are investigating this case under Section 147 of the Penal Code for rioting.
