
Rohani also reminded pregnant women to prioritise their health and ensure the health of their foetus and that if any Zika-like symptoms were detected, to visit the nearest clinic or hospital for a check.
She said this to reporters after attending the 9th International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) here today. The conference which started on Sept 1 concluded today.
Rohani also advised pregnant women to avoid visiting countries that had reported cases of Zika.
She added that her ministry was prepared to provide support services such as counselling to mothers as well as members of the public.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Fisheries Development Board (LKIM) chairman Irmohizam Ibrahim reminded fishermen, especially those who fished near Singaporean waters, to go for checks at the nearest health clinic or health centre if they experienced Zika-like symptoms.
LKIM also advised fishermen associations to be careful, especially those involved in the export of fish in Singapore.
“Currently, there has been no instances of Zika infection reported among fishermen and the LKIM is constantly on the alert to ensure that any outbreak can be checked. We will also ensure there is a sufficient supply of fish available for the country,” he said.
Meanwhile blood and urine tests conducted on three members of a family in Melaka suspected to have been infected by the Zika virus have proved negative, according to state Health, Sports Development and Anti-Drugs Committee chairman Ab Rahaman Ab Karim.
The state executive councillor (exco) said the confirmation was issued by the Melaka Health Department based on tests done by the Durian Tunggal Health Clinic here.
“The mother and two daughters have been confirmed to be free of Zika infection and this puts to rest rumours spread on social media about them being victims of Zika.
“So I wish to confirm here there are no Zika cases in Melaka,” he told a press conference here today.
The press conference was called in response to rumours spread through social media about the family suspected to be infected with the Zika virus and who were quarantined at their home in Durian Tunggal, Melaka.
However a 61-year-old Sabahan, who was a victim of the first case of a locally-transmitted Zika infection died due to heart complications today.
According to health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, the man from Taman Public Jaya in Likas passed away at 5.30pm.
It is believed the deceased had other co-morbid conditions such as high blood pressure, chronic kidney disease, kidney stones and gout. The results of the true cause of his death are still pending.
