Weak earthquake jolts Ranau

A weak earthquake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, struck near Ranau, about 100km east of here at 9.39am today, according to the Meteorological Department.

It said, in a statement, the epicentre of the quake was 16km west of Ranau, and tremors were felt in the area.

Ranau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jimmy Lagung said the station had not received reports of any emergency or damage to property following the quake.

“Although we have not received any report, we are monitoring the situation. Our teams are ready to be sent to any area facing an emergency,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

The people could contact the station at 088-878779 to report any emergency, he said.

A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Mount Kinabalu and the surrounding districts on June 5 last year, killing 18 people, mainly mountain climbers and guides.

Nine of them were from Singapore, six from Malaysia and one each from China, Japan and the Philippines.
