KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court today sentenced Amanah deputy youth chief Fakhrulrazi Mohd Mokhtar to jail for eight months for an allegedly seditious speech at the #KitaLawan rally last year.

Sessions Court judge Shamsudin Abdullah ruled the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt on the prosecution’s case.

“The words by him have the tendency to incite hatred towards the government and judiciary,” he said. “The accused will have to serve his jail term from today (Thursday) onwards.”

The court however granted a stay of execution to Fakhrulrazi, who is a religious preacher, pending his appeal. “Bail is fixed at RM5,000 with one surety,” said the judge.

Fakhrulrazi was represented by Ariff Azami Hussien.

Julia Ibrahim prosecuted.

A total of seven witnesses testified during the trial. Five witnesses were from the prosecution. Fakhrulrazi called two witnesses, namely himself and Teja Assemblyman Chang Lih Kang.

He claimed trial last year for the charge under section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act over a speech on February 21 in front of Sogo during the #KitaLawan protest.

He allegedly said the country’s judiciary was controlled by the government.
