MALACCA: The Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council will submit an appeal against the Malacca High Court ruling to declare as null and void its decision to raise the assessment rate in areas under its jurisdiction.

Chief Minister Idris Haron said a well-versed and experienced lawyer would be engaged to handle the case.

“I have advised the council to find a lawyer who really understands the management and administrative processes of local governments so that a strong case can be made during the appeal process.”

He told reporters this after the launch of the Operasi Gagak Majlis Perbandaran Jasin at Kompleks Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here today.

According to him, the Malacca High Court, on Aug 19, nullified the council’s decision after finding that it had failed to follow the proper procedure under the Local Government Act 1976.

It was reported by news portal Malaysiakini that the case was brought to court by Ayer Keroh (DAP) Assemblyman Khoo Poay Tiong and his wife, Lee Wei Cheng, who claimed they had been affected by the municipal council’s decision.
