PETALING JAYA: A 57-year-old hairstylist who assaulted a flight stewardess on board a Tiger Airways plane was jailed for five days today.

The Straits Times reported that Chong Nyok Kiew, a Malaysian, pleaded guilty to a charge of causing hurt.

Chong flew from Kuala Lumpur to Singapore on Feb 23.

When the flight landed at Changi Airport, a crutch kept in the overhead compartment fell on her and she started complaining loudly.

She confronted the stewardess, Veronica Siau Yen Ting, 26, who apologised to Chong and explained she had warned passengers about the crutch earlier.

Unhappy, Chong punched Siau on her left cheek and her shoulder.

The flight stewardess then informed the pilot to call the police.

The report said Chong’s pro-bono lawyer Noor Mohamed Marican told the court that she had a lot of medical conditions.

She has morbid obesity, with a body mass index of 48.5, hypertension, osteoarthritis and a weak bladder, the report stated. As a result, she is unemployed.

For voluntarily causing hurt, Chong could have been jailed for two years and fined $5,000.
