PETALING JAYA:
Police arrested Namewee, the controversial rapper and video producer, at Kuala Lumpur International Airport this afternoon when he arrived home from abroad, Star Online reported.

He is to be taken to Penang for investigations about his music video entitled ‘Oh My God!’ which he produced for the Hungry Ghost Festival.

He is expected to be produced before a magistrate tomorrow for police to seek a remand order, according to George Town OCPD Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.

Namewee,  whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, had produced the ‘Oh My God!’ video  which surfaced on Youtube in late July. The four-minute clip features a Taiwanese band called Nine-One-One and was shot in places of worship in Penang.

The video shows four men dressed to represent the four major religions in Malaysia singing with Namewee in Mandarin at various places of worship.

The floating mosque in Tanjung Bungah, Penang, is among other locations used as a background. Police reports had been lodged against him and the video earlier this month by 20 organisations which claimed that Namewee had insulted Islam in his latest production.

Namewee said in a separate video clip that he had released the ‘Oh My God!’ music video with the intention of promoting religious harmony.

“Stop the slander and accusations that I have insulted Islam,” he said. “For your information, Namewee is the first Chinese singer in history, to have sang a duet with Nasyid singer Yasin Suleiman.”
