Lim, who is DAP parliamentary leader, said the arrest and three-day remand of student activists in Perak for promoting next week’s rally was unwarranted.

He called for their immediate release.

An unnamed ‘Malaysian Official 1’ is mentioned in civil suits filed by the US Justice Department in connection with money said to have been stolen from 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

Lim questioned whether the Malaysian police investigation into 1MDB had taken into account the allegations of criminal conduct behind the embezzlement of billions from 1MDB as stated in court filings by the Justice Department.

He asked if the police had succeeded in questioning Penang-born businessman Low Taek Jho (usually called Jho Low) and Riza Aziz, stepson of the prime minister, who were both named in the US civil suits.

The US Justice Department seeks to recover US$1 billion in assets said to have been acquired with money stolen from 1MDB and laundered through numerous shell accounts.

Lim questioned why the US investigation seemed to have made greater headway than the Malaysian police, and why the Malaysian investigation seemed to be trailing behind those in Singapore, Switzerland and Abu Dhabi.
