PETALING JAYA: New Proton cars await local medal-winning athletes at the ongoing Rio Oympic Games, the New Straits Times Online reported.

DRB-Hicom Group Managing Director and Proton Chairman Syed Faisal Albar was quoted by the portal as saying that gold medal winners would be given the company’s flagship vehicle — the Proton Perdana 2.0 — while silver and bronze medal winners will get the Proton Suprima and the Iriz, respectively.

“DRB-Hicom and Proton wish all the best to all our competing Olympians in the Rio Olympics,” he was quoted as saying in a statement.

The vehicles will “sweeten” the monetary rewards and sponsorship deals already promised for our medal winning athletes.

Malaysian athletes have, to date, achieved the country’s best haul of medals in the Olympics — with the pair of Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong winning silver in the 10m synchronised diving event and the pair of Chan Peng Soon and Gan Liu Ying winning silver in the badminton mixed doubles.

Azizulhasni Awang, meanwhile, won bronze in the men’s keirin event.

Malaysia is now relying on badminton men’s doubles pair Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong and national badminton ace Lee Chong Wei to up the medal tally, and hopefully, net the elusive gold medal.
