KUALA LUMPUR: A salesman was sentenced to one day in jail and fined RM6,000 or another three months’ imprisonment today for insulting the modesty of a 20-year-old housewife.

Phua Wei Leong, 31, pleaded guilty before Ahmad Solihin Abd Wahid to video-recording the woman while she was inside the dressing room on the first floor of supermarket Aeon Jusco in Taman Maluri Cheras here at 8.30pm on July 30.

The charge under Section 509 of the Penal Code, carries a maximum jail term of five years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.

Counsel Muhammad Afif Che Had in mitigation said Phua was a divorcee and had a child and parents to support, besides being a part time student at a private college.

Deputy public prosecutor Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, submitting that women should not be subjected to exploitation as a lesson to Phua and in the interest of the public.
