BAGAN SERAI:
An international conference on forests will be held at Royal Belum Rainforest in Gerik in October in an effort to place the natural 130-million-year-old rainforest on the world map.

The conference will be organised by the Emkay Foundation of property developer Mustapha Kamal Abu Bakar. He said the conference, from Oct 17, would also be about ensuring that the life of flora and fauna in the forest was preserved.

“We will invite groups of researchers from several countries and expose them to research in preserving the beauty of the natural forest for the future generations,” he told reporters at Bukit Merah Laketown Resort theme park here.

Mustapha Kamal said efforts were also under way to list Royal Belum Rainforest as a Unesco World Heritage Site.

“This is only the beginning of our strategies to focus on sustainable development in the forest and more than that, namely, education, rehabilitation, conservation and research,” he said after opening the Laketown Adventure Park at the Bukit Merah resort.

The park offers several activities such as the flying fox, wall climbing, jungle trekking, rafting and water sports.
