Organised by the National Cancer Society Malaysia (NCSM), Relay for Life KL 2016 is being held for the 10th consecutive year and will take place from August 6-7 at Dataran Petaling Jaya, located opposite Amcorp Mall.
Speaking about the annual event, Viji Nair, Senior Project Manager said, “It is a 16-hour overnight event, symbolising the cancer journey from sundown on Saturday 6pm to sun-up on Sunday 10am.”
Viji said that on Relay Day, like in years past, team members take turns walking throughout the night to ensure there was someone on the track at all times. “We don’t sleep that night because cancer never sleeps,” she said.
Viji also said the event would be officially opened by their Guests of Honour, a group of cancer survivors.
Another “enlightening” part of the event will be the Luminaria ceremony scheduled for 8pm in honour of those who have passed from cancer.
“Here, candles are lit in Luminaria bags which have been painted with messages written on it as well as the name of one cancer survivor,” Viji explained, adding that the light from the bags not only symbolised hope for a cure to cancer but also helped keep the walking track lit-up throughout the long night ahead.
Apart from this ceremony, there will also be stage performances, food and beverage counters for the hungry and thirsty as well as loads of games and activities on the field as well as at the various booths erected.
One segment of the event will also celebrate the selfless work of caregivers, who give up their time, love and support to friends, family and neighbours stricken with cancer. “At the Relay, everyone understands the challenges and joys of being caregivers,” Viji said.
The event was conceptualised way back in 1985 in Tacoma, Washington when Dr Gordon Klatt walked 24 hours to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Since then, this idea has been replicated all over the world where billions have been raised to support programmes aimed at eliminating cancer.
To participate, those interested can recruit family, friends, co-workers or neighbours to form a Relay team. In the weeks leading up to the event, each team member raises money by collecting pledges – the more, the better.
According to Viji, funds raised from the event will be used to educate members of the public about the importance of early detection and prevention of cancer.
“A portion of the funds will also be used to provide access to cancer screening facilities and to support cancer patients and their caregivers by organising events to empower them and increase their quality of life.”
