Cabinet to decide on DBKL’s new parking rates for suburbs

Federal Territories Minister says DBKL's review of the rates will be presented to the Cabinet today for a decision.

PETALING JAYA:
After scrapping the new hourly parking rates imposed on folks in Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) now says it will announce within the week if motorists parking at other upper middle-income areas in the capital city will enjoy lower rates too.

Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor said the outcome of the review would be presented to the Cabinet today for a decision, reported Malay Mail Online.

The review by DBKL is for Bangsar, Sri Hartamas and Kepong where parking rates were raised to RM2 for the first hour, and RM3 for the second hour, with a two-hour limit imposed.

The higher rates and time limit were meant to deter motorists from hogging parking spaces in central business districts (CBD) and to encourage the use of public transport services.

It was enforced on July 18, but drew criticism and confusion from motorists and residents alike when the rates were also imposed in upper middle-income suburbs surrounding the city centre.

This prompted DBKL to scrap the new rates in Taman Tun Dr Ismail.

“We will announce the decision within two to three days, so please wait,” Malay Mail Online quoted Tengku Adnan as saying.

However, he pointed out the new parking rates and two-hour time limit imposed in CBDs was expected to remain.

On July 21, Tengku Adnan said the mix-up was due to the city structure plan that also listed areas like Bangsar and Sri Hartamas as CBDs.
