IPOH:
Perak police are looking into a claim about a deviant religious group in the state said to be trying to spread its influence throughout the country.

Police chief Abd Rahim Hanafi said police were working closely with the Perak religious department to keep tabs on the group before taking the necessary legal action.

“If there are any new developments, I will inform you,” he told reporters after a Perak contingent Aidilfitri gathering.

Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir recently mentioned the group, and a local newspaper report today said it was led by a man who claimed to be “Imam Mahdi” and was planning to form an army known as “Tentera Mahdi”.

The group have claimed to have amassed weapons for war and said to be ready to pledge their allegiance to Imam Mahdi in Mecca.

The report said the group was trying to woo the public by using the influence of an ulama.
