SHAH ALAM:
Perkasa President Ibrahim Ali’s defamation suit against DAP MP Mohd Ariff Sabri Abdul Aziz was resolved today when the latter apologised over a defamatory article.

The suit was filed following the Raub MP’s article entitled “Keadaan Negara Kita Hari Ini – Siri 2” (“The state of our country today – Series 2”) published via his blog on Sept 29 last year.

It claimed that Ibrahim was appointed as company director of George Kent (M) Bhd, which was involved in the Light Rail Transit (LRT) projects.

Ariff Sabri, as the defendant, read a statement of apology to Ibrahim before High Court Judge See Mee Chun.

“Indeed, the statement (article) is not true. With this, I retract the statement and apologise to Ibrahim Ali for all the consequences that arose from this statement. I regret the statement,” he said.

Part of the settlement terms in Ibrahim’s defamation suit, filed on Nov 4 last year, was that the apology statement by the Sakmongkol AK47 blog owner should be published in the media.

In his article, the defendant referred to Ibrahim as “an empty can” and “loud mouth” when claiming the Perkasa president was appointed as director of the company.

Following the allegations, Ibrahim sued the DAP MP, demanding RM10 million in damages.

In addition to the apology, Ariff Sabri will also have to pay an undisclosed sum of money as compensation at the latest by the end of the month.

In the defamation suit, Ibrahim said he had never known the company George Kent and had never been appointed as its director and that the article was published with malicious intent.

The Perkasa president sought general, special and exemplary damages deemed fit by the court, in addition to an injunction to stop Ariff Sabri from issuing, writing, publishing or disseminating any similar defamatory articles against him.
