However, Mohd Faridzuddin Hamzah, 26, only has to serve four years in jail from today after Sessions Court Judge Asmadi Hussin ordered both sentences to run concurrently.
He was attached to the Narcotics Division of the Serdang District Police Headquarters (IPD) when he accepted the bribe of RM500 at 8.15pm on March 5, 2014 at the IPD, and another RM500 at 9.20 pm at a restaurant in Sri Petaling near here, on April 1, 2014.
Meanwhile, in the same proceedings, Asmadi acquitted and discharged the accused from another charge of allegedly receiving a bribe of RM500 from an individual for the same purpose on the grounds that the defence had raised reasonable doubts on the prosecution’s case.
Earlier, counsel Salim Bashir, who represented Mohd Faridzuddin, asked the court to suspend the execution of his client’s jail sentence on the grounds that there were legal issues in the case.
Asmadi allowed the application on condition the accused settled the RM20,000 fine and reported to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office every month.
He also ordered the accused to file a notice of appeal no later than this Friday and raised the bail from RM8,000 to RM15,000.
MACC’s Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammed Heikal Ismail appeared for the prosecution.
