GEORGE TOWN: Many parts of Teluk Bahang, a predominantly fishing town northwest of Penang Island, have been inundated in water after a heavy downpour today.

The heavy rain started at 2pm, and subsided only two hours later. The entire island has been experiencing a spell of continuous rain since last night.

Photographs of Teluk Bahang residents rushing up tall buildings to take cover have been circulating on social media.

Fire and Rescue Department officials, in a brief statement, said it had sent out teams of firemen in boats to help those in need.

State Environment Committee Chairman Phee Boon Poh said rainfall was measured at nearly 200mm.

“Heavy rains of 190mm and high waters have caused flash floods in the Teluk Bahang area,” he said when contacted.

Phee meanwhile said warning alarms at rivers on the island had been set off by the state’s Drainage and Irrigation Department.

According to the department’s website, the Bagan Air Itam watergate had reached critical levels, after it recorded 124mm of rainfall.

The Teluk Bahang Dam, however, has reached beyond the danger level, with 211mm of rainfall measured as of 3.30pm.
