Speaking at a party dinner in Ipoh on Saturday night, the DAP veteran accused Umno of using “irresponsible tactics” which he said reflected the party’s desperation, and not confidence, about the outcome of the next general election.
“Never has there been so much hatred and divisiveness in Malaysia which are disseminated with impunity,” he said.
As an example, he made reference to the use of the term “kafir harbi” by the Mufti of Pahang, which caused a storm of protest by DAP leaders and supporters.
He said the use of ‘kafir harbi’ and ‘kafir zimmi’ were against the concept of Malaysian nation-building and criticised the Prime Minister’s Office for having defended its use.
He urged party supporters to debunk Umno’s “lies and falsehoods” in tying the fate of the Malay community to Umno’s chances of continuing in power. If they did, they would set the conditions for a change of Federal Government and allow Malaysia to become a normal democratic country where governments could be changed without causing a national catastrophe or disaster.
