KUCHING:
Cabinet minister Nancy Shukri said today she will continue to supervise matters relating to discussions on the devolution of powers from the federal to the Sarawak state government.

She denied that a change in her portfolio – from legal affairs to high technology, innovation and nuclear power – would affect the movement for greater Sarawak autonomy.

“Sarawak is very well prepared and have all the things that they want to present to the Federal Government. I don’t think that will affect them, but I must appreciate all those comments even from the opposition to show that we are all concerned about Sarawak,” she said today.

Last week, Sarawak DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen said the change in her portfolio was a setback to the autonomy movement.

“I still have my role over that side,” she said. “I’m still the Minister to oversee matters for Sarawak’s devolution. It has been decided by the Cabinet, there is no withdrawal, there is no termination or anything,” she told reporters when met at a Hari Raya open house, here today.

Nancy, who is MP for Batang Sadong, is also in charge of the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), and the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board in Sabah and Sarawak.

Nancy dismissed any thought that the recent change in her portfolio was a result of the Federal Government trying to put aside Sarawakians.

“Please let us move forward because it is also something good for Sarawak. Let us move forward to do something that we can use, can tap with and I have had in mind what I want to do especially in social innovation.

“I think social innovation is something that we need to embark on. I hope that I can start something on Sarawak as well,” she said. Nancy said it was a good move because it showed that the government had confidence in us (Sarawakians).
