15 Malaysians stranded at Istanbul airport

Embassy spokesman says the 15 have been told to monitor their surroundings and to comply with instructions from the authorities.

KUALA LUMPUR:
About 15 Malaysian are now stranded at Ataturk International airport in Istanbul, Turkey, following an attempted military coup in the country last night, said the Malaysian Embassy in Ankara.

A spokesman for the embassy, contacted by Bernama this morning, said the embassy had so far received information that 15 Malaysians were at the airport. The 15 Malaysians had been advised to constantly monitor their surroundings and to comply with instructions issued by the authorities.

“Malaysians stranded in the airport must always put their safety first and not do anything dangerous in the current tense situation,” he said.

He said the Embassy would continue to monitor the situation and urged Malaysians in Turkey requiring assistance to phone the embassy at +(90) 312-4463547 or +(90) 312-4463548.

The public can also contact the Foreign Ministry in Putrajaya at 03-88874570 (after office hours) or 03-80008000.

The Malaysian Students Association in Turkey, in a Facebook posting, said the association was updating information on Malaysian students in Turkey and asked family members of the students and the people to be careful in selecting news and refer to verified news from official sources for the latest development in Turkey
