PETALING JAYA:
Malaysian student Esmond Chuah Hooi Ong is one of those injured in the truck attack in Nice, France, yesterday, according to reports.

One of 12 students from the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), in Nice for a summer programme, the third-year student sustained minor injuries.

He is in hospital in a stable condition, according to a report by The Star Online. His condition is “not life-threatening.”

The university added in a statement that the student had made contact with his parents.

The other 11 SUTD students, who were due to come back next week, were also reported to be safe and accounted for.

“We are in contact with all relevant authorities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, embassies and working with the International SOS to provide on-ground support and counselling,” said SUTD President, Professor Thomas Magnanti.

“We are also doing all we can to support and update the students and their parents.

“The other 11 students have been advised to remain in their hostel and pay attention to the safety instructions of the French authorities.”

Singapore’s Straits Times reported earlier that Chuah’s father had posted an appeal on Facebook for information about his son.

“Please find my son Esmond Chuah Hooi Ong (SUTD Singapore) who injured himself in the Nice, France attack this morning. Wish to know his condition now,” Mr Chuah Tze Leng wrote at about 4pm.

A Singaporean was also reported injured in the attacks in Nice, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said later.

It did not name the man and said his injuries were not life-threatening.

At least 84 people were killed after an attacker at the wheel of a heavy truck ploughed into crowds celebrating Bastille Day in the French city of Nice.

The driver, identified by a police source as a 31-year-old Tunisian-born Frenchman, also appeared to open fire before officers shot him dead.

French President Hollande has described the incident as a terrorist act.
