IPOH:
The Malaysian Highway Authority (MHA) and highway concessionaire Projek Lebuhraya Utara Selatan (PLUS) Berhad have been urged to consider creating parking bays near the Menora Tunnel for vehicles encountering problems to stop.

Perak Menteri Besar Zambry Abd Kadir said the emergency bays, northbound and southbound, could be among efforts to reduce the risks of accidents, especially those involving big vehicles like buses and lorries, in the area.

“If possible, the special bays should be created beside the expressway on both sides for vehicles to stop during emergency situations,” he said after chairing a state executive council meeting here today.

Last Sunday, an express bus rammed into 10 vehicles, reportedly due to faulty brakes, after the Menora Tunnel, southbound, on the North-South Expressway.

Zambry, however, praised the efforts by the MHA and PLUS to ensure that risky locations were safe for the expressway users, such as by installing LED lights.

“Besides that, speed breakers were also created on the road surface which has helped reduce accidents,” he added.

On another matter, Zambry said he had received a number of names for consideration as the new Perak State Legislative Assembly Speaker to replace S Devamany who stepped down after he was appointed as deputy minister in the Prime Minister’s Department recently.

“At the moment, there is no decision yet. We will discuss and forward the names, including from MIC, to Prime Minister Najib Razak,” he said.
