Abusing emergency lanes, 52 summonses issued

Police say most of the traffic offenders using emergency lane were women, adding it could have been due to a lack of awareness on the part of the drivers.

KUALA LUMPUR:
Fifty-two motorists were slapped with summonses by the Kuala Lumpur traffic police during the “Ops Selamat” on the PLUS Expressway near the Desa Petaling interchange here yesterday afternoon.

City Traffic Enforcement and Operation officer ASP Leonard Lawrence Abbie said the two-hour operation, which began at 5.30pm, was aimed mainly at drivers who abused the emergency lane during peak hours.

“During the operation, two officers and six traffic policemen were stationed at the location to stop motorists who abused the emergency lane.

“Most of those who were issued with summonses during the operation were women… most probably because of the lack of awareness about the use of emergency lanes.

“I hope this will be a lesson for them and also for others,” he told reporters at the location.

Leonard said the city police would continue to carry out such operations from time to time, especially at 10 main locations in the city, namely Jalan Kepong, Jalan Cheras, Middle Ring Road II, Jalan Tun Razak, Jalan Ipoh, Jalan Kuching, Jalan Ampang, Jalan Klang Lama, Jalan Duta and Jalan Sungai Besi.
