PETALING JAYA:
Deputy Transport Minister Ab Aziz Kaprawi today shot down AirAsia’s dream of having a separate low-cost carrier (LCCT) airport.

He told The Sun there was no need to build a separate LCCT.

He pointed out that other international airports, which Malaysia emulates, did not have such a LCCT.

Aziz said the current KL International Airport 2 (klia2) accommodates all airlines’ passengers and carriers, including AirAsia, allowing them to transit from one destination to another.

“You cannot isolate a low-cost terminal because full-fledge and long-haul carriers need comfort and service upon arrival.

“Additionally, our government intends to make Kuala Lumpur as a central transit hub; for instance, British Airways also can transit (via our terminal).”

Budget airline AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes had urged the government to build a proper LCCT.

“It can keep klia2 for full-service airlines.”

He described the current klia2 as a “Frankenstein terminal” which was “neither premium nor low-cost”, although it was meant to be a LCCT.

“If MAHB does not want to call klia2 low cost, it should build a proper one so we can create more jobs.”
He pointed out that klia2 was not integrated and has no hybrid airlines but only low-cost, with AirAsia making up 98% of the traffic. “The rest are low cost carriers, too.”

The worst comment he heard was that MAHB had invested so much money in klia2 and so it needs to raise airport charges.

MAHB “promised the Cabinet that there would be no need to raise airport charges”.

He lamented that Malaysia Airports built a RM4 billion airport at klia2 when all he wanted was a RM2 billion LCCT in Labu, Negri Sembilan.

“We projected a new LCCT at klia2 would only cost RM1 billion.”
