IGP: Measures taken to meet any threat from Daesh militants

He requests members of the public to report any suspicious activity to prevent any untoward incident.

Khalid-Abu-Bakar
PUTRAJAYA: Inspector-General of Police Khalid Abu Bakar has assured that the security forces have taken precautionary measures in facing any attack or threat from Daesh militants and terrorists in Malaysia.

However, he said, the public should be wary of threats from the militant group and to cooperate with the security forces by reporting on any form of Daesh activities in their respective areas.

Khalid said incidents such as the latest terror attack at Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport in Turkey could happen in this country, but could still be avoided if the people took precautions.

“For the public, we hope they will immediately report on any suspicious activity to the police so that action can be taken to prevent any untoward incident.”

He said this following the gun and suicide bomb attack at Ataturk Airport last Tuesday (local time) which has so far killed 42 people and injured hundreds of others.

Khalid was met at a Wanita Umno Jalinan Ramadan programme, where he also said that despite efforts made, Malaysian police had not yet been able to interview face-to-face, British paedophile Richard Huckle due to legal system constraints.

He said although requests had been made to meet and interview Huckle in prison, they were told that it would take time as it should be made through a mutual legal arrangement involving the foreign ministries and attorney-generals of both countries.

A London court had on June 7, handed 22 life sentences to Huckle after he pleaded guilty to 71 charges of sex abuse against children, aged from six months to 12 years and mainly from poor communities, when he was in Malaysia and Cambodia for almost a decade.

On the number of police personnel on duty during the Aidilfitri festive period, Khalid said the number would be sufficient as only 10% of them were given leave and no leave for traffic police until “Op Selamat”, which began on Tueday, ends on July 13.
