With that in mind, a group of youths have started handing out clothes instead to the homeless in view of the upcoming Hari Raya festivities.
The group – Sovereign Outdoor Heritage (SovoKL), comprising 35 volunteers, organised the “Baju Raya For Them” campaign at Jalan Chow Kit last night.
Project manager, Khairul Bazli Najmuddin told FMT that among the aims of their campaign was to prevent food wastage apart from genuinely wanting to help make those who were destitute feel appreciated by others in society.
“This also gives hope to the less fortunate that they too, can celebrate Hari Raya with new clothes.
“We believe the new clothes provided will make them feel happy and appreciated in society,” he said, adding that they planned to distribute clothes to between 200 to 300 people.
According to project assistant manager Hafizuddin Mazlan, the clothes distributed were donated by members of the public.
Apart from clothes, the group also distributed “carry mats” (a small, portable sleeping mattress) to the homeless.
This was to ensure the homeless had a more comfortable surface to sleep on instead of on the ground or on pieces of cardboard as they normally did.
The group hopes to organise the campaign on an annual basis during the holy month of Ramadan.
