GEORGE TOWN: The Consumers Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the Federal Government to implement the Automated Enforcement System (AES) soon.

Its president, S.M Mohamed Idris, said that the move was vital to avoid another road carnage this upcoming Hari Raya.

“There had been 22 deaths and 1,450 accidents recorded daily during Hari Raya celebrations all these years and most deaths were recorded on municipal and federal roads.

“Motorcyclists contributed to 60% of the death toll,” he told a press conference here today.

Idris stressed that increasing the perception of being caught when doing wrong on the roads would lessen the possibility of committing traffic offences and, hence, would make roads much safer.

Besides implementing the AES system, Idris also said that all public transport should be subjected to mechanical checks to ensure the vehicles were safe and in good condition.

“Not only the vehicles need to go through checks, the drivers of public transport should also undergo tests to ensure they are not involved in drugs.”

Idris also advised all drivers to have a proper rest before driving home for Hari Raya.
