NGO expects to see more rebels in Umno after Raya

Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM) says Muhyiddin Yassin and Mukhriz Mahathir wield a strong influence within Umno.

PETALING JAYA:
The Syawal month may witness the birth of more anti-Najib rebels within Umno.

The Coalition of Branch Chiefs Malaysia (GKCM) said this, and added that Umno President Najib Razak should not feel too secure, even after the recent victories in the Sarawak election and by-elections in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar.

GKCM Vice-President Rushdan Mohamed was responding to the Umno Supreme Council’s decision today to sack suspended Umno Deputy President Muhyddin Yassin and Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir and to suspend Umno Vice-President Shafie Apdal.

“Do not doubt the influence of Muhyiddin, Mukhriz and Shafie.

“Their influence is very strong.

“Maybe you don’t see much fight from the Malays now because it is the fasting month,” Rushdan told FMT.

Muhyiddin and Mukhriz had openly criticised President Najib Razak over 1MDB and were sacked by the party’s Supreme Council for breaching party discipline.

Najib said the decision by Muhyiddin and Mukhriz to share the stage with Opposition leaders in recent times and their constant attacks on Umno were among the contributing factors that led to their sacking.

Rushdan said the sacking of Muhyiddin and Mukhriz was proof that Umno had “buried democracy.”

“Umno is now Najib’s party. The voices of the members and smaller leaders no longer matter.

“Muhyiddin and Mukhriz voiced out grievances and now they are fired,” Rushdan said.
