KUALA TERENGGANU: If you are in Kuala Terengganu during the fasting month, take the opportunity to go to the “Car Food Sahur” at Pantai Batu Buruk for “sahur” (pre-dawn meal).

There, you’ll see stalls with a variety of food spread, comprising local and western dishes, as well as “fusion”, run by a group of local youths where customers sit on mats to eat, instead of tables.

The atmosphere is relaxing, with the cool sea breeze, and entertainment provided by local buskers.

A spokesman for the group, Che Ku Basir Che Ku Maidin, 31, said the idea of setting up the Car Food Sahur came up when his friends, who are working in various sectors, suggested having an activity that could provide them with extra income during Ramadan.

“We want to have an activity after the terawih prayer. So, we came up with selling food for sahur,” he said when met by Bernama.

Che Ku Basir, who is an interior designer by profession, said with the cooperation of the Kuala Terengganu City Council, he and his friends opened the Car Food Sahur, which operates from midnight to 4.30am.

He said the Car Food Sahur was allotted 20 lots, with 15 for food and beverage operators, and the remaining for clothing and others.

“Our objective of having this Car Food Sahur is not just to get extra income, but also for charity.

“The traders here will have to contribute 10 percent of their sale collection for charity, which we will collect when the Car Food Sahur ends on July 3,” he added.

Che Ku Basir said the donation would be contributed to selected welfare homes.

Meanwhile, a patron, Wan Azman Wan Ibrahim, 40, from Manir, said he liked the concept of eating on mats that was promoted by Car Food Sahur.

“It feels like eating at home, but here you can eat while enjoying the sea breeze. The food here is tasty and the prices reasonable,” he added.

Wan Azman was accompanied by his wife and children and it was the second time that the family had their sahur at the Car Food Sahur.

Another patron, Nor Azieyana Deraman, 19, came with her family all the way from Kuala Berang to have their pre-dawn meal at the Car Food Sahur.

“A creative way to attract young people to come for sahur. I hope it will still be here next Ramadan,” she said.
