Debate organising committee chairman Wong Hon Wai said Gerakan Secretary-General Liang Teck Meng had confirmed his attendance and picked June 28 for the debate.
The debate is scheduled to be held at the Caring Society Complex, Jalan Residensi, George Town.
“Liang’s rep called me to confirm that he will attend. The debate will take place at night and will be conducted in Bahasa Malaysia,” Wong said.
Wong, who is Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng’s political secretary, said a moderator for the debate would be picked in the “next few days”. He assured that the person would be an “independent” person.
Talk about a debate on Penang’s largest infrastructure project began after Penang Gerakan’s Jason Loo threw the idea at Lim Hock Seng, the state’s public works committee chairman.
Loo had been critical of the costing aspects of the feasibility studies and had raised various questions, with Hock Seng rebutting his claims point for point.
However, when Loo asked Hock Seng to debate him in public, the senior politician snubbed him saying Loo was not “of his stature” and not “an elected representative”.
Liang then offered to take on Hock Seng. To this, the latter told a press conference, “I do not know who Liang is.” A day later, Hock Seng said he now knew who Liang was and that he would debate him.
