Unnecessary to rename klia2, says Liow

Transport minister questions need to rename klia2, apparently referring to AirAsia’s intention to rename the low-cost terminal as LCCT2 on its website.

PETALING JAYA:
It is neither necessary nor accurate to rename the KL International Airport 2 (klia2).

Taking to Twitter, Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai noted that the abbreviation “klia2” was registered as part of the KL International Airport’s official code for Kuala Lumpur (KUL).

“This ongoing #klia2 debate is unnecessary,” Liow said on his official Twitter account @liowtionglai.

“All parties in aviation sector must collaborate and work together for benefit of Malaysia.”

It is believed that Liow was referring to the ongoing problems between budget carrier AirAsia and the Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).

Recently, AirAsia Bhd CEO Aireen Omar informed that the airline would be changing the name klia2 to LCCT2 (Low-Cost Carrier Terminal 2) on its website and promotional materials.

This came after the airline’s group CEO, Tony Fernandes, announced last week his intention to promote klia2 as LCCT2.

She reasoned that the move would send a clear message to MAHB that they should stop denying the existence of AirAsia and its contributions to the growth of the aviation industry and low-cost flights.

Aireen had also opined that the name change would not create confusion among passengers and taxi drivers.

Earlier, after Fernandes’ announcement, MAHB had said calling the airport by any other name would only serve to mislead and confuse the public and passengers. It also said it would be against aviation rules.
