The commission’s chairman, Mohd Hashim Abdullah said the figure could go higher if voters living outside the constituencies returned to vote.
Voters in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar are going to the polls today to elect new MPs following the deaths of Wan Mohammad Khair-il Anuar Wan Ahmad and Noriah Kasnon respectively, in a helicopter crash in Sarawak on May 5.
Mohd Hashim told reporters after a visit to the polling centre at SMK Raja Muda Musa here that polling was going on smoothly in the two by-elections.
About 34 per cent of the 42,365 voters in Sungai Besar had cast their ballots by 11am.
The Kuala Kangsar by-election is a four-cornered contest among candidates of the Barisan Nasional (BN), PAS, Parti Amanah Negara and an independent, while Sungai Besar is contested by BN, PAS and Amanah.
