PETALING JAYA:
Sarawak state ministers and Barisan Nasional assemblymen risk being axed from their posts or dropped in coming elections if they do not perform, says Chief Minister Adenan Satem.

Adenan, in his winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly, said that he had set key performance indicators (KPI) for ministers and BN assemblyman, Borneo Post Online reported.

They are required to submit their KPI reports to Adenan every six months.

“I will be monitoring closely, the performance of the ministers through their KPIs,” he told reporters outside the state assembly building yesterday.

“There could be a cabinet reshuffle. If they don’t perform, they have to go.”

He added that the KPI was important to ensure there was a strategic alignment between KPIs of the ministries and the state’s development goals and objectives.

As for the assemblymen, Adenan said with KPIs in place, he expected all BN elected representatives to be up-to-date on issues and problems faced by the people, and this in turn will lead to better services rendered to the people.

“Through this effort, we will be able to provide better services to the people.”

In his winding-up speech earlier, Adenan also reiterated Sarawak’s desire to safeguard the state’s rights and interests.

He said discussions with the Federal Government were aimed at reclaiming state powers and rights wrongly encroached upon by the Federal Government, based upon the principle of “render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”, quoting a popular passage found in the Gospel of St Matthew in the Bible.

Adenan said the recent election results showed the state government received a strong mandate to take all necessary measures to safeguard these rights as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement.

He added that if the special constitutional safeguards for Sabah and Sarawak were not part of the Malaysia Agreement, the two Borneo territories would not have joined in the formation of Malaysia, and Britain would not have agreed to the creation of the Federation.
