PETALING JAYA:
Gerakan secretary-general Liang Teck Meng has urged the Penang state government to take part in a televised debate to clear the air about its plans for a RM6.3 billion cross-Channel tunnel which has caused controversy about how the state will pay for the mega-project.

He said the project involved public funds and state land, but the state government had responded with disdain and evasiveness to the “honest and valid question asked by many quarters”.

Liang offered to take the place of Jason Loo, Penang Gerakan Youth’s acting leader, whose proposed public debate in George Town was snubbed today by the state executive councillor for works, Lim Hock Seng.

Lim was reported to have said “Who is Jason Loo? At least get someone of the same level as me” when challenged to take part in the debate.

Liang, who is MP for Simpang Renggam, offered to stand in for Jason, if the state government believed that Jason was a nobody and should be an elected representative in order to qualify.

“Even if the Penang state government does not dare to hold a public debate on the tunnel project and subject itself to public scrutiny, there is no need for such arrogant replies,” he said.
