Is it a coincidence or planned, asks Penang DCM II P Ramasamy over last night's desecration of a Hindu temple in Penanti, barely a week after a similar incident in the same town.

BUTTERWORTH: Police have formed a special task force to investigate the desecration of two temples, which occurred one week apart in Penanti, a small town east of Prai here.

Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy said state Deputy Police Chief DCP A Thaiveegan had assured him police will find the culprits behind the two incidents.

Ramasamy said in the latest incident, three statues at the temple were shattered.

“I visited the temple earlier this morning and it was shocking. Just one week after a similar temple located 1km away was desecrated, we have another one like this.

“One can only wonder if this is a coincidence or planned?”

According to Ramasamy, three statues in the temple — that of Muruga, Ganesha and Muniswerar — were destroyed at the Sri Dharma Muniswerar Temple located near the Ara Kuda Estate in Penanti

The temple, he said, was believed to be nearly 100 years old.

Ramasamy said temple caretakers found the grilles for the deities prised open using a sharp object.

Last week, the Muthumariamman Temple also had a few deities destroyed.

Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng donated RM10,000 to rebuild the statues at the temple.
