According to the report, Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) Midshipman Chan Jun Kwan recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Aerospace Engineering with Merit from the prestigious United States Naval Academy (USNA) in Maryland.
Chan, who hails from Alor Star, was a top graduate of the Royal Military College and received a full scholarship to study at USNA in 2012 after he was selected from among hundreds of candidates from 158 countries.
Admission into USNA itself is no mean feat as only 6% of applicants are admitted and foreign midshipmen constitute only 1% of the student population.
During his four years at USNA, Chan showed his leadership qualities by leading his company as the company executive officer and as battalion executive officer.
He also captained the Navy Men’s Volleyball Team and competed in the National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships in Kentucky.
Chan comes from a family of military men, with his father and brother both serving the nation.
His father, Captain Beng Cheong, is a communications director in the Defence Ministry, while his eldest brother, Lieutenant Jun Shen, is now training as an officer at RMN headquarters.
Last week, FMT reported that a Malacca boy made the nation proud by graduating from the prestigious West Point military academy in the United States.
Suhanraj Rajasegaran was one of 953 cadets who graduated from the Class of 2016 on May 21.
Only a few international students are taken in at West Point – one of the top military institutions in the world – and they must excel in all areas.
