It was merely a bill to enhance the enforcement powers of the Shariah Court, she said.
Speaking to reporters after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Education Ministry and the National Civics Bureau on a patriotism training programme for teachers, Azalina called for an end to the heat surrounding PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang’s Private Member’s Bill.
“We have spoken enough about the Bill. I think we should just wait until October.”
The bill tabled in Parliament last month, was initially listed as the last item on the Dewan Rakyat’s Standing Order, and probably would not have seen light of day during that session.
However, it jumped queue after Azalina proposed that it be tabled on the last day of the May parliamentary session itself.
However after tabling the bill, Hadi asked that Parliament defer debate on the motion to the next sitting, which is in October.
Asked if she believed PAS would be using the bill to win over voters in Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar, Azalina shot back: “I don’t even know what’s going to happen in the next 10 minutes.”
By-elections are to be held for the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar parliamentary seats on June 18, following the deaths of the incumbents in a helicopter crash early last month.
