KUNDASANG:
A monument was opened today in memory of 18 people who died on Mount Kinabalu when an earthquake struck the Ranau region last year.

The monument is built of granite that fell from the mountain during the earthquake. It is situated at Kiau Gate, about one kilometre from Timpohon Gate, the starting point for the climb up Mount Kinabalu.

The monument records the date of the tragedy and the names of those who perished. It was opened by the state minister for tourism, culture, heritage and environment, Masidi Manjun, at Taman Kinabalu, here today.

Among the victims were seven Singaporean schoolchildren, two teachers and a guide.
