Mat Sabu refuses to comment on Hadi’s shariah bill

Asked why he was not contesting in the by-elections, Amanah president says the party has chosen the “best candidate” for the people in Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar.

SHAH ALAM:
Amanah President Mohamad Sabu refused to be drawn into the PAS shariah bill issue.

“I don’t want to talk about it as I am not an expert,” he told reporters after the Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) national congress launch here today.

Yesterday, Amanah Communications Director Khalid Samad said his former boss, PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang, had wasted everyone’s time by not debating his Private Member’s Bill to enhance the powers of the Shariah Court even after being given way by the government to table it in Parliament.

Calling it a “political drama” before the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections this month, Khalid, who is the Shah Alam MP, also expressed his curiosity as to why Minister in charge of Parliament Azalina Othman Said was not angry at Hadi who postponed the debate after the motion was expedited over other government proposed bills.

Mohamad, who contested to defend his former PAS deputy president position, lost to Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man in the last election, along with the mostly “professional” wing of the Islamist party, which later went on to form Amanah.

He also explained that he did not contest in the upcoming Kuala Kangsar and Sungai Besar by-elections as the party had put up the best candidates for the people there.

“There can only be one candidate, right? They can’t be more than one (per seat).

“We picked someone whom we think is suitable for that place,” he said.
