In his closing speech at the PAS Youth Wing muktamar, Youth Chief Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz said the brand of politics – titled “Budaya Politik Matang Sejahtera” (Culture of Mature and Harmonious Politics) – adopted by PAS was the fruit of Nik Aziz’s efforts.
He said in the past, when BN attacked his father, who was the party’s spiritual adviser, his father would fight back and when BN declared a truce, Nik Aziz would also do so.
Nik Abduh said subsequently, when BN knew attacking PAS was harmful for them, the coalition changed its strategy to avoid being hated even more.
The result of this was the greatest period of peace PAS had ever had, after decades of being “oppressed by the ruling coalition”.
In fact, he said, prior to Nik Aziz’s passing on Feb 12 last year, the former Kelantan Menteri Besar had met Prime Minister Najib Razak on numerous occasions.
“They held discussions to improve the relationship between the state and the Federal Government, and also discussed issues affecting Muslims.”
Nik Abduh also revealed that many people had come to him saying Amanah leaders were using Nik Aziz’s name in championing their struggles and asked why he did not reprimand them.
“I tell them that Nik Aziz is a father to all and he belongs to everyone.
“However, do not say or do things that my father would not do if he were alive.”
Nik Abduh also said people should not relate Nik Aziz to any party other than PAS as the former had fought for PAS till the day he died.
He also stressed that those who idolised his father should not glorify Nik Aziz, but his struggles.
Nik Aziz joined PAS in 1967 and went on to become the Pengkalan Chepa assemblyman.
In 1990, he became the Kelantan MB until his retirement in 2013. He was the party’s spiritual adviser from 1991 till the day he died.
